Poppy Seeds; Usage Tips, Benefits and a Recipe

May 10, 2017

Poppy Seeds are native to Eastern Mediterranean soils. Seeds can be in light gray, dark gray, black or midnight blue color.

The spice form is formed long after the capsule has lost its potential to produce opium so it is not considered narcotic.

They have earthy, nutty flavor and crispy texture. Poppy seeds contain niacin and folate, but they are a better source of minerals.

Just 1 teaspoon provides measurable amounts of calcium, iron and zinc.

1. Dietary Fiber

You will get 9.25 grams of dietary fiber from 50 grams of raw poppy seeds, which is 25% of your daily recommended intake.

2. Vitamin B-Complex Storage

Poppy seeds contain B-complex vitamins, including thiamin, pyridoxine, niacin, pantothenic acid, riboflavin and folic acid. Vitamin B-complex are extremely important during the metabolism process, especially when metabolizing fat and carbohydrates.

3. Minerals

One teaspoon of poppy seeds has 4 percent of the recommended daily intake of both calcium and phosphorus minerals, which combine to form the mineral used to build bones.

Usage Tips of Poppy Seeds

You can use poppy seeds in your diet by mixing them into salad dressings or sprinkling them into whole-wheat pancakes or to flavor noodles, breads, and bagels.

Add to fruit salad, coleslaw to gain a bit of crunch.
